About Colin
Colin Tulloch has been making instruments since 1994. His interest in stringed instruments began when he started playing the violin for his own enjoyment and decided to try making one.
After leaving school, Colin started a career in engineering contrary to the advice of his art teachers and his father who recommended some variety of woodworking.
A few years later, he met the renowned American violin maker Kelvin Scott through a mutual relative in North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the islands of Orkney and the ancestral home of both families. Kelvin Scott recognized in Colin’s violins a meticulousness of craftsmanship and natural feel for the materials that he felt would benefit from a more formal study of the art of violin making.
Colin was awarded a Scottish Arts Council grant that enabled him to undertake an intensive period of study with Kelvin Scott at his studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. Coin has maintained both a personal and professional relationship with Kelvin. The two are planning joint instrument-making projects to promote their connections with North Ronaldsay.
Colin's 38 years have provided him with much professional experience as well as a family which includes 7 year-old son Findlay, 2 year-old daughter Isla, and partner Leona.
